Scottish schools are 'failing environments'

Scotland’s new education design champion has slammed the quality of the country’s new and existing school buildings amid calls for more “transparency” in the school procurement programme.

Paul Stallan, who took up the role last month and is also a director at RMJM, hit out at local authorities, describing Scottish schools as “failing environments”.

In an interview with the Sunday Herald, he said the authorities lacked vision, delivering “miserable” and “short-term” briefs that produced sick buildings.

A spokesperson for Scottish teaching union the Educational Institute of Scotland backed Stallan’s comments, saying: “Far too many schools are not really fit for purpose. If teachers and end-users had been properly consulted during the design stage, all these problems could have been avoided.”
