Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative launched
Local authorities, and their partners, will be encouraged to propose more sustainable communities as part of the solution to meeting housing requirements in their areas.

The initiative is part of the Government's vision of more homes of all tenures, built to higher environmental and design standards. It is hoped that proposals will be ambitious and innovative, addressing the needs of those on lower incomes and helping to create sustainable, mixed communities across the country. Large or small scale proposals, whether for new build or for reshaping existing neighbourhoods, in rural or urban areas around the country, can all be considered as SSCI projects, reflecting the character and diversity of Scotland.

Residents in these communities should be able to enjoy sustainable, adaptable designs, with low energy demands, helping the environment ,and it is hoped that developers will have the chance to create modern and innovative products, reflecting Scottish identity, to offer to the market.

The SSCI is one of the outcomes of the Firm Foundations housing consultation and was launched on June 27, following the statement in Parliament by Nicola Sturgeon on the outcomes of the Firm Foundations consultation on June 25, 2008.

Those intending submitting a proposal under the SSCI should notify the Scottish Government of their intentions by August 6, 2008, including an outline site plan.

Full documentation should be submitted by September 17, 2008. For further details contact Nicola Hay, Senior Planner, Directorate for the Built Environment, The Scottish Government, 0131 244 7087 or email Nicola.hay@scotland.gsi.gov.uk

The SSCI is supported by Homes for Scotland, Architecture and Design Scotland, and Sust. At the Lighthouse.
