Richard Murphy Architects new British High Commission HQ for The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has formally opened in the Sri Lanka's capital Colombo. Richard Murphy himself represented the practice at the opening.
In 2001 Richard Murphy Architects won a limited competition for the design of the new British High Commission in the Sri Lankan capital. The practice cites the commission as an exciting international development for them and also a rare example of the Foreign Office working with an architect from outside London.
The practice collaborated with the architectural practice of Milroy Perera, architects in Colombo. The architects also worked closely with SKM Anthony Hunt, structural engineers, to achieve the necessary defensive structures (the whole building is made out of reinforced concrete) and also with their colleagues, Fulcrum Consulting, services engineers, to provide a design that is as energy saving and naturally ventilated as possible.
