Nicoll Russell Studios, the award winning architects practice based in Broughty Ferry are celebrating their successful 25 year history in a travelling exhibition. The exhibition will open on Tuesday 11 March 2008 at the RIAS Gallery, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh and will then tour a number of venues across Scotland.
Nicoll Russell Studios partner Ric Russell OBE explains: “We are delighted that our practice has grown in stature over the past twenty five years, to the point where we can celebrate our successes in such a public way. Of course that success has been the result of the patronage of our clients and the considerable hard work of our staff throughout that period and we look forward to reminiscing with many of them at a private view during the exhibition. The exhibition reviews our work to date and looks towards the future, illustrating some of our 2500 projects along the way”.
The practice was established in 1982 by Andrew Nicoll and Ric Russell as a result of the successful completion of Dundee Repertory Theatre. The project made an enormous impact at a time when very little was being built in Scotland. During the past twenty five years, NRS have won eight RIBA awards, two awards from the National Civic Trust, a Dynamic Place Award and in addition, a further forty awards.
Recent involvements in projects such as the new £35 million Liverpool Magistrates’ Court is seen as by NSR as a ‘breakthrough’, where ever larger high profile projects over an increasingly wide geographical spread are being tackled by the practice.
Currently, the practice is also involved in two of the Scottish Arts Council’s final tranche of major projects in the form of the Howden Park Arts Centre in Livingston, which is currently on site, and the Briggait Arts Centre facing the River Clyde in Glasgow, which is being tendered. Other arts projects nearing completion are: the Hillcrest Housing Association Head Quarters; a private house in South Africa; and the new £50 million New Victoria Hospital in London.
