Scotland’s school design “tsar” has warned that new-build schools have compromised on space standard and comfort to the detriment of both pupils and teachers.
Paul Stallan, who was appointed by Architecture & Design Scotland, and is also RMJM’s European design director, made the claims last week in giving evidence to the Scottish Parliament.
Stallan told the education, lifelong learning and culture committee that A&DS had reviewed over 50 new-build schools across the country, with the majority failing on environmental quality.
“Spaces were difficult and tight, and the problems could be compounded by an inability to open up partitions or gain access to external areas or corridors,” he said, adding that many schools were “overcellularised”, while playground spaces were too often “harsh and brutal”.
Stallan insisted that Public Private Partnerships were capable of producing good schools but only if good leadership, ample resources and the right skills were deployed.
