Hazelwood School in Glasgow was one of the winners at this year's British Council for School Environments (BCSE) Industry Awards, which were announced last night at an awards dinner at the Emirates Stadium, hosted by Wayne Hemingway.
Following over 170 entries for the Awards, Hazelwood School by Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects was the only Scottish project to be amongst the winners in the Inspiring Design category. The other winning projects were: Christ the King Centre for Learning, Knowsley – Knowsley MBC (Secondary); Golden Lane Campus, Islington – Nicholas Hare Architects (Co-located Mainstream and Special School); Merchants’ Academy, Bristol – Penoyre & Prasad Architects (Secondary); St Mary Magdalene Academy, Islington – Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (All Age); Water Hall Primary School, Milton Keynes – Milton Keynes Council (Primary). GM+AD were also Highly Commended in the Best School Architect category.
Hazelwood School, which caters for children aged from 4 to 18 with severe visual, mobility and sensory impairment, "has been highly commended or short listed for every international school and architectural award," according to Alan Dunlop. To date the projects has received an International Architecture Award for 2008 presented by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design; an Honor Award at the US based 2008 DesignShare Awards, and also featured on the shortlist of the inaugural World Architecture Festival Awards. The project also recently received a High Commendation at the World Architecture News (WAN) Awards and a Second Place at the International Design Awards.
Ian Fordham, Deputy Chief Executive of the BCSE, said:
"The entries this year were a welcome opportunity to celebrate great work by architects, suppliers, construction firms, local authorities, teachers and pupils, despite these challenging times. There was - rightly - robust debate amongst the judging panel. The result is a short list which can act as a gold standard reference point for anybody involved in the school design and construction process. Congratulations to all the winners."
Alan Dunlop said: "We are immensely proud of the project and delighted for the school, particularly for the children, parents and teachers. We had a brilliant working relationship with Monica McGeever the Headteacher and her team, which has much to do with our success."
