Plans for a major new contemporary arts centre in Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens have been backed by the Scottish Government.
Councillors had already approved the £12.5m Peacock Visual Arts project which would see part of Union Terrace Gardens leased for a nominal fee to Peacock Visual Arts, and a new arts centre constructed on the site. The council hopes to create a thriving cultural quarter in the area, with the Art Gallery and His Majesty's Theatre both nearby.
The Brisac Gonzalez Architects plans, which have won praise from Architecture and Design Scotland, will see a new gallery, performance spaces, studios and an education suite constructed in the Victorian sunken gardens by 2010.
A detailed model of the plans for the centre will be on display to the public in the city council's St Nicholas House headquarters.
