The results of this year's Scottish Student Awards for Architecture have been announced. Director Yvonne Farrell of the internationally acclaimed Dublin based Grafton Architects, opened the awards ceremony, which was held at The Lighthouse on the 12 October, with a presentation on the practice's work.
The Scottish Student Awards, which are run in collaboration with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, include: RIAS Silver Medal for best fifth year student; the Lighthouse Award for best third year student; the Urban Design Award; Sust. Award for Sustainable Design; the RIAS Drawing Award.
This year's awards were presented to the following students:
1. RIAS Rowand Anderson Silver Medal for Best Scottish Student (See main image)
Winner: Jon Morrison, Mackintosh School of Architecture
Museum of Water
Museu de l’aigua Barcelona, Raval Reservoir, Park & Public Square
Judges comments: The combination of strong concepts and elegant and rigorous execution made this entrant a clear winner. The museum project was particularly praised for the clarity of its plan and its resolution of issues of access to, and circulation through, the building. This project also was praised for addressing the potential role of the building as an orientation device within the city.
Highly Commended: Klas Hyllen, Edinburgh College of Art
The Edinburgh Literature Centre... a piece of the psychodynamic city
Royal Mile, Edinburgh
Judges comments: Exceptional presentation and the clarity of the well observed accompanying text were particularly praised. The restrained elegance, skilful use of materials and understanding of the importance of the play of light within the building and views out from the building were also complimented.
2. The Lighthouse Award for Best 3rd Year Student
Winner: Jonathan Mennie, Scott Sutherland School of Architecture
Luthiers Workshop, St. Andrews
Judges comments: This student’s work demonstrates a well developed understanding of how historic and contemporary architectural forms can be combined, a care and understanding in the use of materials and an impressive command of the process of creating new buildings within the city.
High Commended: Phillip Zoechbrauer, Mackintosh School of Architecture
Glenluce Musicians Retreat
Stranraer Music Box
Judges comments: Both designs and detailing are impressive, as is the understanding demonstrated by this student of the architectural process and its potential to generate positive experience within the city.
3. Urban Design Award
Commended: Josie Ellis / Fiona Greer, Mackintosh School of Architecture
Plaça de Boqueria Masterplan, Barcelona
Judges comments: The analysis which underpins this submission is very sound. Its sense of the urban grain and coherence of the cultural route idea is impressive. Overall this is a well thought out, good design and a coherent strategy.
4. Sust. Award for Sustainable Design
Winner: Andrew Paul, Strathclyde University
Multi Storey: Changing Patterns of Regeneration
Sighthill, Glasgow
Judges comments: A well resolved strategy, intelligent analyses of process and demonstration of an understanding of the need for localised solutions in the evolution of sustainable communities. This is allied to rigorous analysis and a good understanding of the sustainability benefits in adaptive re-use. This submission is a clear winner.
5. RIAS Drawing Prize
Winner: Klas Hyllen, Edinburgh College of Art
The Edinburgh Literature Centre... a piece of the psychodynamic city
Royal Mile, Edinburgh
Judges comments: The exceptional quality and clarity of this submission and the subtle rendering of light and shade stood these drawings apart.
High Commendation: Jon Morrison, Mackintosh School of Architecture
Museum of Water
Museu de l’aigua Barcelona, Raval Reservoir, Park & Public Square
The elegantly spare rigour of execution gives these drawings clarity, precision and legibility which not only expresses the designs convincingly, but creates works which are inherently attractive.

The exhibition is currently on Level 4 at The Lighthouse until the 8 November 2009
