The National Indoor Sports and Velodrome scheme will form the centerpiece to Glasgow's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The project also forms the
cornerstone of a full regeneration of a previously brown-field industrial area.
The National Indoor Sports Arena is an extremely flexible building capable of hosting a large variety of indoor sports. These include all of the following sports in both training and competition mode: Athletics, Artistic Cycling, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Tae Kwan Do, Netball, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
Sport Concepts are working with specialist velodrome and athletics track designers and seating suppliers. Features include a state of the art hydraulic track which lies flat on the arena floor when not in use. Telescopic seating can be configured in a variety of ways to allow good spectator sightlines for each sport. Economies are made in the design by combining building elements - shared space includes the changing rooms, plant, entrances, concourse, loading, and cafeteria.
The National Indoor Sports Arena & Velodrome comprises the following uses into a single complex:
* 200m athletics track with 6,000 spectators
* 250m velodrome track with 2,000 spectators expandable to 5,000
