Learning about Architecture

Architects influence every aspect of our built environment, and society looks to architects to define new ways of living and working, by creating new buildings and developing innovative ways of using existing ones.

Architects' skills are in demand in all areas of design, property, and construction and their expertise is invaluable in key areas such as the redevelopment of parts of our of towns and cities; in facilitating an understanding of the impact of a development on a local community; in managing a construction programme; conserving old buildings; or in simply offering advice on the use and maintenance of an existing building.

Architecture is perhaps the most multi-disciplinary of any field of study or training, in that it draws together science, technology, design, the arts, mathematics, heritage, history and culture.  A large part of architectural education is concerned with the development of new ideas, values and abilities and as a result the study of architecture encourages students to develop new ways of seeing, thinking and doing.

In studying the built environment, young people can gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of the world in which they live. And through engaging with, discussing and reflecting on issues associated with buildings and places, a number of important cross-curricular issues can also be brought to life. These include citizenship, sustainable development, health and employment as well as social justice, diversity and environmental responsibility.
