Kilmacolm is a quiet leafy commuter village nestled in the countryside of western Scotland, between the towns of Greenock and Paisley.
The needs of a growing family and home business necessitated the new garden room by Glasgow based abbozzo. The project brings light to the formerly dark interior of the property, facilitating engagement with the garden and creating a new focus for daily life.
The brief stipulated a direct connection with the garden, natural light and additional space as primary concerns. The scale and proportion of the garden room was carefully considered in order to ensure that it made minimal impact on the existing house and its surrounding garden. The project subtly mixes a traditional and contemporary approach, with the reserved palette of materials acting as a foil to the design’s bold architectural and structural design.
The detailing was continually explored and refined and has resulted in the effective juxtaposition of existing sandstone with new render; the articulation of the roof and pergola, which brings a richness and tactile quality to the composition; and the careful placement of a picture window to create a vista of the neighbouring church spire. As a result the garden room creates a contemporary response to its Scottish vernacular context.
The efforts of the design team and ever enthusiastic client brought the scheme successfully from paper to built form and within a relatively modest budget.
