Elder and Cannon Architects has won The Lighthouse 2007 Achievement Award. Presented annually by The Lighthouse, Scotland's National Architecture Centre, the Achievement Award recognises outstanding contributions to the promotion of architecture and the built environment.
The award was presented on Thursday 30th November by Professor Andy MacMillan and Lighthouse Director Nick Barley at a ceremony held at Glasgow's Oran Mor. A keynote lecture by Bob Allies of prestigious London based practice Allies and Morrison preceded the award presentation.
The Achievement Award is the 57th award presented to the "immoderately modest" Glasgow based practice, according to Professor MacMillan. Dick Cannon and Tom Elder received the award at the event on behalf of the practice.
ELDER & CANNON ARCHITECTS PROFILE
Established in 1980, Elder and Cannon are a leading architectural practice with a portfolio of high profile projects and a reputation for innovation and high quality work within a broad range of building types, master planning and interior design.
Completed works spans both new build and refurbishment, often in challenging and sensitive contexts where the practice has developed a considerable expertise.
The Glasgow based practice is known for its strong design philosophy and they continue to seek to provide each project with its own identity by evolving creative solutions to functional requirements while placing equal importance on technical, cost and programming aspects. Sustainability is integral to the design process
The office has considerable experience working on urban and suburban masterplans and development plans which include conservation areas requiring sensitive resolution of existing character and new build interventions. Recent projects in the education field have included listed buildings and buildings within conservation areas including Kelvinside Academy, Jordanhill School and St. Aloysius College.
In residential projects the practice has developed a strong expertise through many inner city commissions especially within sensitive contexts. Recently a number of inner city residential projects have been completed by the practice in various locations including the first phase of Granton Watefront for the Burrell Company and Places for People and a 230 unit development for Wimpey Homes at Alexandra Parade.
The practice portfolio also includes a range of refurbishment and conservation projects. The recently completed Grade ‘A’ Listed Kirkhaven Church in the east end of Glasgow was converted into Business Premises has been followed by the conversion of the Grade ’B’ Listed Former Castlemilk Stables Block into managed workspaces and community creche facilities.
In addition the practice is involved in the conversion/ refurbishment/extension of warehouses at Parnie Street into an Arts Centre, new offices for Shettleston Housing Association Offices, residential development at Grade A’ Listed Hawkhead Hospital.
The Practice also has considerable experience in urban masterplanning and feasibility studies which include Granton Edinburgh, Blackhill, Ladybank, Bedford Street, Barrhead, Gourock, Oatlands, Cheapside areas of Glasgow, and Sunnyside area of Sunderland.
The Office has received a significant number of important awards and lists fifty six since 1990 - see below for details. In 1991 the practice won the RSA Gold Medal for Architecture and in 2004 the RIAS Award for Architecture, Best Building in Scotland for St Aloysius Clavius building.
