Gathering Space winner announced

      <date>2008-05-01</date>

Gareth Hoskins Architects have been announced as winner of the competition to design the Gathering Space, the Scottish presence at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Over 50 practices entered the competition to create the space, which is set to be a hub for a series of debates, film screenings and events - including the keynote British Council debate. All competition submissions were presented anonymously and details of the successful practice were unveiled only when the winner had been selected. Scotland’s presence at the Biennale is being led by The Lighthouse, the National Architecture and Design Centre.

“Public stairs as seating has had a long tradition of being a type of informal gathering place. Precedents include the Spanish Steps in Rome and the entrance stairs at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. These places are vital to the urban environment. If ‘all the world is a stage’, then the urban stair and the people who use them can be thought of as the audience.”
Gareth Hoskins

“The stairs as space” vision for the Biennale by Gareth Hoskins Architects proposes a physical presence in Venice that offers both an indoor auditorium and an external gathering space in an installation which will be constructed entirely from either sustainably sourced or reclaimed timber. On the outside a set of public stairs, with seating for up to 200 people, will be used for both organized events and informal gatherings. Meanwhile the stairs form a roof, which rises above the indoor auditorium - a space that is expected to seat 80-100 people. The design is based on an original idea by Elisa Yon, and will be in situ in a major piazza during the first week of the Biennale.

“We were impressed both by the number and the quality of the submissions for the Gathering Space,” says Nick Barley, Executive Director of The Lighthouse. “After a day of vigorous debate on the submissions, which were presented anonymously, the judges selected the proposal by Gareth Hoskins Architects. The judges were impressed by the structure’s ability to act as a kind of stage; as a place both to see and be seen in Venice, while also providing a very unusual indoor space suitable for lectures, seminars and presentations. "The judges were unanimous in their view that this structure, with its strikingly simple concept, its strong sense of drama and its ability to function effectively in several different ways, is the ideal choice to represent Scottish architecture on a world stage.”

''It is a fantastic opportunity for us to be involved in creating Scotland's presence on the world stage of the Biennale,” says Gareth Hoskins. “The design, developed from Elisa's initial ideas, aims to combine the formal requirements for an events venue with the creation of a memorable new place within the Venice - a new sculptural element that encourages people to pause, look, engage and gather and that creates a strong identity and presence for Scotland amongst the different cultures that will come together within the City.''

The Scottish Government has awarded a grant of £75,000 towards The Gathering Space as part of a programme of initiatives aimed at showcasing contemporary Scotland in an international context:

Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture Linda Fabiani said:
“As the most important architectural gathering in the world, the Venice Biennale is a wonderful platform to showcase the innovative architectural design that is thriving here in Scotland. Gareth Hoskins Architects’ design for the Gathering Space will be a real focal point and an inspiration for those exploring the art of architecture - putting Scotland right at the heart of the activity.”

Elsewhere in the competition Paul Taylor’s submission was Highly Commended with JM Architects and Graeme Massie Architects receiving Commendations.

The judging panel consisted of:
Morag Bain Director, ACCESS to Architecture
Leonie Bell - Programme Director, The Lighthouse
Ian Gilzean, Chief Architect at the Scottish Government’s Architecture Policy Unit
Rory Olcayto, Senior Reporter, Building Design

The 11th Venice Architecture Biennale is directed by Aaron Betsky, former Director of the acclaimed Netherlands Architecture Institute.

Media Partner for The Gathering Space will be Building Design, one of the UK’s leading architectural publications.

Elder and Cannon Architects has won The Lighthouse 2007 Achievement Award.
SHIFTS

      <date>2007-08-15</date>

SHIFTS projects you into the future of Scotland's Central Belt and gives you a glimpse into the year 2057.

Imagine the transformation of the M8 into a major tourist attraction running through Scotland's Central Forest. Imagine the creation of a new canal, connecting the west and the east coast, wide enough to carry a floating opera house or a football stadium. Imagine a decentralisation of political and economical power, producing local decision-making structures that support local identity, culture and production. Imagine Scotland relying only on hydro and wind power, being Europe's main export nation of green energy.

Imagine the Central Belt not as a zone to move through but to move to. Imagine a life that is faster and slower at the same time, a life that is healthier, greener and more fun. Imagine that SHIFTS have happened.

Four International project teams, led by the Scottish architecture practices Cadell2, Collective Architecture, GRAS and vD&B, have developed scenarios and propositions that speculate about shifts and transformations that could have happened in the years up to 2057. SHIFTS' and the projects' original focus lay in the topics of movement and transport in the Central Belt. The projects as they have evolved extend the meanings of 'movement' and 'transport' to embrace social, cultural, economic and political aspects and the implications these will have for the built environment and its usage.

The scheme is part of ACCESS to Architecture, a programme of events and activities informed by Scotland’s Policy on Architecture.

This year’s SIX Awards were presented to the following students at The Lighthouse on Friday 16 August 2007.

RIAS Silver medal for best fifth year student
Winner: Liam Madden, Strathclyde University
Highly commended: Paul Taylor, Mackintosh School of Architecture

Lighthouse award for best third year student
Winner: George Woodrow, Edinburgh University
Commended: Lucie Vejmelkova, Edinburgh College of Art

RIAS Drawing Award
Winner: Paul Taylor, Mackintosh School of Architecture

SUST: Award
Winner: Liam Madden, Strathclyde University

Exhibition Touring Information:
The Gallery, Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde, 131 Rottenrow, Glasgow
1 Feb – 24 Feb 08

Proposals for the development of a new textile mill and an associated masterplan for the Condorrat area of Cumbernauld earned Liam Madden the RIAS Silver medal and the SUST: Award in the prestigious “SIX” Architecture Awards. The Strathclyde University graduate, now working with award-winning practice NORD, envisaged the creation of a mill to process hemp as an insulation material and building product as the catalyst for social and economic regeneration of the area. The proposed mill would at once introduce a new employer into an area of economic decline and capitalise on the existing agricultural infrastructure, thus breathing new life into an endangered workforce.

“I see the mill as the keystone of a strategy to redevelop the area,” says Madden. “Currently, clear boundaries exist between the edge of the town and its rural hinterland, but by redeveloping the area it will be possible to reconnect the town’s resident population with the landscape on which it has historically relied.” Madden’s masterplan also addresses the issue of the over density of housing by restructuring areas, creating trade-offs between density and sustainability

The Glasgow Death Compendium, a proposal for a specially created cemetery/ crematorium/ memorial, devised by Mackintosh School of Architecture graduate Paul Taylor, won the RIAS Drawing Award and a commendation for the Silver Medal.

“The aim of the Glasgow Death Compendium,” says Taylor, who is now working with Rick Mather Architects, “is to provide a central, municipal place for the City of Glasgow to bury, cremate and remember its inhabitants; to create a place where life and death convene.”

Taylor identified the point where Glasgow’s two rivers, the Kelvin and Clyde, meet as the site for his development. “The site itself is an archive. Now a hinterland, the edges to both rivers at this territory point towards their industrial heritage: a dock, a graving dock, a quay.” The ambition of the project is also to complete the Kelvin Walkway,

The Lighthouse Best 3rd year Award went to George Woodrow of Edinburgh University. The Urban Design prize was not awarded.

The judges for the 2007 Awards were:
Mary Arnold-Forster of Dualchas Design; Nick Barley Director of The Lighthouse; Dick Cannon of Elder and Cannon Architects; Arnie Dunn President of the RIAS; Pauline Gallacher (Chair) Acting Director of ACCESS to Architecture; Mary Roslin and Tatjana Schneider, Tutor and researcher Sheffield University.
A part of the Six Cities Design Festival, 17 May – 3 June 2007

This exhibition explores the dual nature of Edinburgh, a city whose physical development has been strongly linked to philosophical thought and literary movements. Edinburgh has a schizophrenic nature, caught between the rational and the irrational, nostalgia and modernity, the urban and the natural. Northern City re-presents Edinburgh through four collaborations between leading Scottish architectural practices and award winning artists. Participants include: Metis; Mark Dorrian + Adrian Hawker; Victoria Clare Bernie; GROSS. MAX; Nathan Coley; Dalziel + Scullion; Sutherland Hussey Architects.

The Northern City exhibition, originally shown in the Lighthouse, Glasgow has been re-presented as a series of installations across the city of Edinburgh for the Six Cities Festival. All are situated within the city centre of Edinburgh and can be visited within one day. All venues have free entry. Venues include: The National Portrait Gallery, The Scottish Parliament, The roof of the MWB Business Centre, St Andrew’s Square and St Giles Cathedral.
